Matt Bomer Emmy AwardMatt Bomer is 3,000 miles away from his family shooting White Collar in New York, but still got to share his happy Emmy news this morning when his husband, Simon Halls, called from Los Angeles.

“It was so great to share that moment with him because I had to separate myself from my family to play this role,” says Bomer, who shares three children with Halls. “I was also hangry!”

Bomer lost an astonishing 40 pounds to play a man dying of AIDS in HBO’s The Normal Heart, for which he just earned a supporting-actor nod. “It’s definitely hard to be away on a day like this,” he adds. “Especially because all (the kids) saw at the time was when I was really skinny and frail.”

The Normal Heart was adapted from Larry Kramer’s 1985 play focusing on the gay community’s struggle to have the AIDS epidemic taken seriously by the government. “This was a play I loved for more than 20 years,” says Bomer.

He allows that the role was “incredibly physically challenging. But getting to play this role was really life-affirming for me,” he says. “This (nomination) is a great bookend to the best creative experience I’ve ever had.”

Today Bomer is getting “back to the grindstone” on White Collar, and he’s soon back to another epically popular project: Magic Mike XXL. “It’s legit and it’s happening — and it’s happening pretty soon,” he says, noting his job is currently to bulk back up to play his male stripper opposite Channing Tatum. “It’s definitely physically demanding to go the other way, as well.”
